For All You Hot Sleepers
Are you in that season of life where you feel hotter than the bottom of your laptop.... especially at night? Sometimes "the fire" or night sweats come with age. Sometimes the use of certain medications brings on the heat. Nighttime seems to be the worst for me. Through trial and error I found a few tried and true things that work.
First things first, after much consideration and research I had to invest in a cooling mattress. I ultimately decided on the Tempur-Pedic Luxe Breeze, which provides the epitome of luxurious comfort with unrivaled cooling properties. The Luxe Breeze stays 8° cooler all night long. The SmartClimate Max Dual Cover System combines with the technology integrated directly into the foam layers to provide a sleeping environment that can maintain a cooler temperature than any other Tempur-Pedic for the entire night.
Second, I keep my bedroom at a cool 67 degrees year round. Not only does it help improve the quality of our sleep, but it can also prevent disease and even slow down the aging process! There are several benefits to sleeping in a cold room. We actually fall asleep quicker, have improved sleep quality, anti-aging benefits, increases melatonin production, prevents metabolic disease, enhances mood and reduces stress levels.
Sleepadvisor tells us the following: "As nighttime approaches, our body temperature naturally drops, signaling that it’s time to slow down and get some rest. By keeping your bedroom cooler, you’re reinforcing your body’s natural instinct to sleep. If the room is too hot, it could potentially block that signal and cause it to take longer for you to fall asleep. Your body temperature bottoms out right before bed, and will rise naturally as you get closer to waking. This rise in body temperature can cause people to feel like they’re “sleeping hot.” If you’ve ever woken up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat, you know how disruptive that can be. If you keep your bedroom cooler and regulate the temperature throughout the night, you’ll find that your overall sleep quality improves.
Another way that keeping your room cold can improve the quality of your sleep is by stimulating melatonin production. It turns out that rooms with temperatures in the range of 60 to 68 degrees stimulate the production of melatonin, which encourages sleep."
I have also found the use a cooling blanket to be beneficial. I sleep with the Evercool Comforter by Rest Duvet. It helps me fight night sweats and I wake up fresh with uninterrupted sleep. The Evercool™ Cooling Comforter is cooler than other “cooling” comforters, softer than luxurious silk and machine washable for easy care. I combine the duvet with cool-touch pillows with moisture-wicking properties and a hypoallergenic fill that holds their shape. (Use code SHANNON25 for discount)
I always opt for light-weight cooling pajamas. I look for a quick dry breathable fabric like bamboo or silk. Here are a few that are developed with moisture and heat management functionality and comfort in mind.
I keep a bottle of Kindra Cool Down Mist on my nightstand. Its instant skin-cooling sensation lasts for at least two hours. You’ll feel refreshed, with hydrated, soothed skin. Formulated with omega-rich extracts to nourish, hyaluronic acid to hydrate, and with our InstaCalm-3 Complex - a blend of three clinically studied ingredients shown to:
Provide an immediate skin-cooling sensation
Help reduce the intensity of hot flashes and night sweats
Supports relieving skin sensitivity, redness, and skin irritation
Boost collagen and nourish dry, sensitive skin
It’s also fragrance-free and won’t stain your clothes or irritate your skin. (Use code Shannon20 for discount on your first order.)
Lastly, on those warm summer nights I get comfort from the Opal Cool Pad. It offers natural menopause relief and stays cool for up to two hours. It's super easy to use and is reusable with no refrigeration required! Re-cools at room temperature.
Sleep quality is so important to our health and wellbeing. It is our superpower and touches every aspect of our health. When we are "catching those Z's" the body is repairing itself. So stay cool and rest well, my friends!
